The Department of Oil and Gas Engineering at the College of Engineering and Computers conducted a field visit to the Aden Refinery Company, in implementation of the practical aspect that the college attaches the utmost importance to; to provide students with applied knowledge of the oil refining process, and laboratory tests of petroleum derivatives, in order to achieve the principle of linking the theoretical aspect with the practical aspect, which the University of Science and Technology has been keen to implement in the oil and gas engineering courses.
The students were accompanied by Engineer Mohsen Al-Suwailihi.
The visit began with the laboratories, where the students listened to a brief explanation by the laboratory specialists, starting with the Crude Oil Department and the Light Oil Department. The students learned about a set of tests conducted on light products such as gasoline (car fuel) and kerosene (jet fuel), and then to the Black Oil Department, where the students were explained about heavy products such as light diesel (car and truck fuel), heavy diesel and fuel oil (fuel for power stations and heavy engines), and how to conduct the required tests for these products.
Then, the Director of the Training Center, Eng. Saeed Al Hadhrami, explained how the filtration and production units work, and reviewed the furnaces, distillation towers and pumps.
The second day was spent at the oil port of the Aden Refinery Company, where the students learned about the port’s tasks and activities, its importance in receiving oil tankers, and the mechanism for taking samples from marine tankers and liquefied gas tanks to conduct tests in the laboratory.
During the visit, the specialists provided an explanation of the types of tanks and pipes extending from the port’s harbor to the product storage warehouses in the port area, all the way to the oil and gas facilities sector in the refinery.
At the end of the visit, the students expressed their thanks and appreciation to the Director and staff of the Training and Development Unit at Aden Refinery Company for their warm welcome and cooperation in providing scientific and engineering information and making the visit a success.
