University of Science and Technology - Aden celebrates International Translation Day 2024

The Department of English Language (Translation Program) at the College of Administrative and Human Sciences at the University of Science and Technology - Main Center Aden, organized today, Monday, September 30, 2024, in the university’s seminar hall, a celebration on the occasion of International Translation Day, by organizing a scientific lecture via Zoom, delivered by Dr. Ahmed Al-Abbasi, Associate Professor of Translation and Head of the Translation Department at Qatar University. The lecture was titled: “Translation as a Specialization and Profession in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Opportunities and Challenges.”

Before the lecture began, Dr. Mahmoud Abdo Thabet, Dean of the Faculty of Administrative and Human Sciences, welcomed Dr. Ahmed Al-Abbasi, and conveyed to him the greetings of the university’s leadership and the happiness of all its members in hosting a well-known specialist in translation today like Dr. Al-Abbasi. After that, Dr. Nabil Muhaim gave a brief overview of the guest’s academic biography before beginning his lecture.

In the interesting and valuable lecture, Dr. Ahmed Al-Abbasi touched on the history of machine translation, the stages it went through, in addition to the stage of computer-assisted translation programs, then entering a new stage, which is the stage of artificial intelligence, which has caused a major revolution in the field of translation and the work of translators.

Dr. Al-Abbasi stressed that translation students and translation practitioners should be aware and prepared for the next phase, in which translators will be increasingly burdened with efforts, and that they should benefit from and adapt various artificial intelligence programs; they are tools in the hands of the translator that he controls and harnesses for his benefit, and they help him complete his work with less effort and in a short time.

Dr. Al-Abbasi added that the tremendous progress in artificial intelligence technology has changed many concepts in the methods of learning and teaching languages, and the methods of teaching them, as well as in reformulating translation programs to make them keep pace with new changes, as the role of the translator in the presence of the machine focuses on the work of linguistic review after the translations produced by artificial intelligence programs; This makes the translator a distinguished person who takes the initiative, and as long as he trusts himself and his conscious dealing with machines; he remains the strongest and smartest, and is able to adapt all these programs to serve him, and to perform his work in a way that achieves efficiency and excellence in his work.

Dr. Al-Abbasi concluded his lecture by raising important questions in the context of this topic, which translation students, those in charge of translation departments, deans of colleges, and decision-makers in universities must answer. He stressed at the end of his lecture that the University of Science and Technology is a pioneering university that is always quick to excel and make courageous decisions to develop its scientific programs.

It is worth noting that the university’s celebration of the International Translation Day began with a student activity supervised by Mr. Mansour Al-Zakri, Head of the Translation Department, and Dr. Nabil Muhim. This activity consisted of giving presentations in English, performed by students from the first, second and third levels. Then, an activity was held in consecutive translation, performed by a group of fourth level students. After this activity, specifically at 11:00 am, students at all levels had an appointment with this important lecture by Dr. Ahmed Al-Abbasi, which addressed the topic of translation in the age of artificial intelligence.
