Monday, February 9, 2026: the events of the 2nd International Conference on Economic Recovery commenced in the temporary capital, Aden. The conference is organized by the University of Science and Technology – main campus in Aden in association with the Central Bank of Yemen, under the patronage of HE the Prime Minister Dr. Shaea Mohsen Al-Zandani, and with broad participation from government, banking, and academic leaders.
The conference began at Petra Hall (Coral Hotel) with a delegate welcoming and a formal ceremony. Despite economic challenges in the country, the impressive attendance highlighted the event's high level of importance.
The opening ceremony began with a recitation from the Holy Qur’an, followed by a speech of the University of Science and Technology Prof. Dr. Abdulghani Hamid Ahmed, Rector of the University and Chairman of the Conference. In his remarks, he emphasized the essential role of scientific research in diagnosing economic problems and the importance of utilizing academic studies to support economic recovery and reconsolidating efforts.
For his part, Dr. Mohammed Al-Rashidi, Deputy Head of the Conference, delivered a speech in which he outlined the conference’s objectives and stressed the importance of partnership between the public and private sectors, as well as academic institutions, in leading economic recovery and reconstruction programs.
The conference agenda also included partners’ speeches. Prof. Dr. Al-Khader LaSour, Rector of University of Aden, highlighted the importance of strategic partnerships between academic institutions and the banking sector, their role in developing economic policies, building research capacities, and actively contributing to recovery pathways and sustainable development.
The conference included a speech from the Yemeni Banks Association, delivered by Dr. Ahmed Ali Bin Sankr, who focused on strengthening cooperation between the banking sector and academic institutions and on building a more efficient and sustainable financial system.
In a recorded speech, the Governor of the Central Bank of Yemen, Mr. Ahmed Al-Mabaqi, emphasized the central role of the banking sector in achieving financial stability and stimulating economic development. He stressed the need to reconsolidate efforts to confront current economic challenges and enhance confidence in the financial system.
Following the opening speeches, the conference activities included a short break, marking the beginning of the scientific sessions, which discussed several specialized research papers in the fields of monetary policy, development financing, and the role of the banking sector in reconstruction.
The conference included the presence of several officials, including the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Yemen, Prof. Dr. Mohammed Omar Banajah, members of the Central Bank’s Board of Directors, deputy ministers, university rectors, and a group of local and international experts, adding significant academic and institutional momentum to the event.
The conference received support and sponsorship from a number of banks and financial institutions. The senior sponsors included Tadhamon Bank, Al-Qutaibi Islamic Bank, Al-Shumul Islamic Microfinance Bank, Al-Busairi International Bank, Aden Islamic Microfinance Bank, Al-Kuraimi Islamic Microfinance Bank, and the National Bank of Yemen. Participating institutions also included Saba Islamic Bank, Al-Qasimi Islamic Microfinance Bank, Tamkeen Microfinance Bank, Yemen and Bahrain Shamil Bank, the Commercial Bank of Yemen, Yemen Bank for Reconstruction and Development, in addition to Al-Maraseem.
The conference is scheduled to continue on Tuesday and Wednesday at the University of Science and Technology campus in Enma City, where further scientific discussions will be held and practical recommendations will be developed to enhance financial stability and support economic recovery and reconstruction pathways. In addition, the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Exhibition will be organized as the main associated event of the conference.
