Under the patronage of the Acting President of the University of Science and Technology, Prof. Dr. Abdulghani Hamid Ahmed, the College of Engineering and Computer Science at the University held a scientific symposium entitled “Cybersecurity Legislation and Controls.”
In the symposium, Dr. Jalal Al-Awdi, Professor of International Law and Cybercrime Researcher, presented a number of models of cybersecurity legislation and laws in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan and Morocco. He also addressed the gap that our countries suffer from in terms of not enacting cybercrime laws and legislation to protect users’ rights. The doctor’s paper summarized a number of important recommendations related to the subject. Following that, Dr. Nasr Al-Saqqaf presented a paper in which he addressed cybersecurity controls and policies at the organizational level within institutions, and the cybersecurity controls that must be adhered to.
The necessity of building cybersecurity strategies specific to the work environment, and working to spread the culture of cybersecurity among workers; since the human factor is the weakest link in cybersecurity, through hackers using social engineering to hack individuals, and making them unintentionally implement what the hackers request. The symposium ended with a presentation by Mr. Mohamed Ali, in which he reviewed ways to protect data from hacking, by installing original anti-virus programs, as well as by using strong passwords.
The seminar was attended by first and second year cybersecurity students at the university, who were very impressed.
