On the occasion of World Food Day, and under the generous patronage of the Acting President of the University of Science and Technology, Prof. Dr. Abdul Ghani Hamid Ahmed, the Department of Health Sciences at the University of Science and Technology - Main Center, Aden, Therapeutic Nutrition and Diets Program, organized a scientific event entitled: “The Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future.”
The event was organized with the participation of a group of speakers specialized in the fields of food security and agriculture, in addition to holding various student activities that focused on the importance of raising awareness of nutrition and food security issues, under the direct supervision of Dr. Sara Muhammad Kalis, a therapeutic nutrition specialist, and a group of students from the therapeutic nutrition and diets program at all academic levels.
The event was opened by the Therapeutic Nutrition and Diets Program Supervisor, Dr. Taha Abdo Ali, who welcomed the attendees at the beginning of his speech, then stressed the importance of this day in enhancing community awareness about the rights of individuals to obtain sufficient and nutritious food, pointing to the major challenges facing the world in securing food for all amidst the current crises, and he also stressed the role of nutrition in achieving public health and sustainable development.
Following that, the Vice President of the General Authority for Research, Dr. Mohammed Salem Al-Khasha’a, spoke in a valuable intervention on food security, pointing out the importance of enhancing the national food stock to face future challenges. In his speech, he explained the importance of scientific research in developing innovative solutions to enhance agricultural productivity and reduce gaps in food provision, especially in difficult times.
Afterwards, the Advisor to the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Ahmed Abdul Malik, delivered a speech in which he focused on the need for cooperation between all sectors to ensure food security. He also called for supporting local farmers and encouraging agricultural policies that contribute to improving agricultural productivity and preserving natural resources. In his speech, he touched on the growing role of the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Fisheries in food security under the leadership of the Minister, Major General Salem Abdullah Al-Soqtri, and the role of the Ministry in coordinating production and service tasks with relevant entities, most notably the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Food Security Secretariat, the Scaling Up Nutrition Program (SUN), universities, research institutions, businessmen, and financing and executive organizations at the local and international levels.
In his speech, agricultural engineer Eng. Khaled Mohamed Saeed discussed the most important agricultural crops for food security, pointing out the need to invest in modern agricultural technologies and increase awareness of the importance of local agriculture. He also spoke about the role of strategic crops in supporting the local agricultural economy and securing the food needs of the local market.
During the event, student Wad Abdul Qawi recited a poem entitled: “For Whom?” with lyrics by Professor of Therapeutic Nutrition, Prof. Dr. Samia Qutbi. The poem highlighted the importance of food as a basic human right.
The Master’s student in Therapeutic Nutrition and Dietetics, Al Anoud Al Taheri, also presented an intervention on the food security situation in our country, in which she spoke about the most prominent obstacles and challenges facing food security, as well as the proposed solutions to enhance nutritional awareness.
The students of the Therapeutic Nutrition and Dietetics Program held a scientific exhibition, which included awareness brochures about healthy food and the importance of proper nutrition at different stages of life. The scientific exhibition also included a review of the most prominent challenges facing food security in light of global crises, in addition to presenting a set of proposed solutions to overcome these challenges.
The event concluded with attendees stressing the importance of cooperation and joint work between different sectors to achieve sustainable food security. The event received great interaction from attendees, and contributed to raising awareness of the importance of food as a basic right for every human being, and educating society about the challenges and solutions related to food security.
