International Translation Day is an international day celebrated on 30 September each year. This day has been promoted by International Federation of Translators (FIT) ever since it was set up in 1953. In 1991 FIT launched the idea of an officially recognized International Translation Day to show solidarity of the worldwide translation community in an effort to promote the translation profession in different countries. This is an opportunity to display pride in a profession that is becoming increasingly essential in the era of progressing globalization.
In this international occasion, the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at the University of Science and Technology celebrated the international translation day at the main campus of the university. In the ceremony, the rector of the university Prof. Dr Hameed M. Aklan delivered a speech in which he stressed the importance of celebrating these events and the need for standardized efforts to improve the craft of translation in Yemen. In addition, this event included a speech delivered by Dr. Jamal Dirham, dean of the faculty of social sciences and humanities in which he highlighted the crucial role played by the translation program in the English Department at the Faculty in training translators and providing the labor market with the competent workforce in translation.
For his part, the Chairman of the National Commission for UNESCO in Sana'a. Mr. Ahmed Al-Rubai delivered a speech in which he called on all parties concerned with translation in Yemen to play their role in the service of Yemeni heritage, literature and civilization, pointing out that the National Commission for UNESCO in Sana'a is currently working on launching a project which concerns translating the best of our heritage, literature and arts in Yemen.
From the international perspectives, the event included interventions via Skype for some specialists and experts in translation, most notably, Dr. Mohammed Fawzi Ghazi from the University of Taibah in Medina Al-Monawarah and Dr. Khaled Al - Shahari from Qatar University in which they highlighted the status of translation and its importance and the ways of development.
From the local perspectives, the event included some interventions on translation of Wikipedia and its role in enriching the Arabic contents presented by Dr. Eman Barakat, chairman of the organizing committee of the event and a faculty member in translation and Ms. Eman Al-Maqbali, translation specialist and teaching staff in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. At the end of the ceremony, the UST dignitaries and organizing committee honored Dr. Abdul Wahab Al-Maqaleh and awarded him the University's token of appreciation in recognition of his efforts, dedication and contributions in the field of translation.
